Fictions of Dementia
In our reflections about how we want to live with dementia, narrative fiction provides helpful insights. Susanne Katharina Christ explores both forms and functions of the representation of dementia in Anglophone novels. Different narrative modes offer a variety of epistemological prerequisites and possibilities for narrating dementia from giving an ever so close imaginative glimpse at subjective experience to looking at life with dementia in a more distanced way. Fiction allows readers to learn about the challenges of dementia, grants them perspective-taking, it trains cognitive flexibility, and explores the meaning and limits of memory, knowledge, narrative and imagination. Thus, it offers trajectories of cultural coping with dementia.
