The building which was originally built in 1885 to designs by Francis H. Kimball, when Standard Oil moved from Cleveland, Ohio was extensively overhauled in 1921-1928 by Thomas Hastings the surviving partner of Carrère & Hastings with Shreve, Lamb & Blake as associate architects.
