Haydn's E-flat major Sonata is connected to no fewer than two great female musicians and musical centres: according to its autograph it was written in London in 1794 for the pianist Therese Jansen, who was widely acclaimed there at that time. However, its first edition -- from the Viennese publisher Artaria in 1798 -- was dedicated to Magdalena von Kurzböck, who was among the leading female pianists of her time and numbered among the highest-ranking musicians of that royal and imperial capital city. Haydn knew both women, and even was a witness at the wedding of Therese Jansen and Gaetano Bartolozzi in May 1795. The term "Grand Sonata" - as it was called in its early prints - honours not only the scale and technical demands of the work, but also its tone. The impressive and imposing start to the opening movement makes it absolutely clear that this supremely effective work was conceived for the concert stage. The ethereal Adagio (with its harmonic shift to E major!) constitutes a meditative rest point before a Hungarian-inspired Presto Finale brings the piece to a rousing close. Our Urtext edition, edited by Haydn specialist Georg Feder, uses the musical text of the Haydn Complete Edition, supplemented with fingerings by Hans-Martin Theopold. L'histoire de la sonate en Mi bémol majeur de Haydn est directement liée à deux grandes musiciennes et deux métropoles musicales. En effet, selon le manuscrit autographe, Haydn la composa en 1794 à Londres pour la pianiste Therese Jansen qui jouissait là-bas d'une grande notoriété. Par contre, la première édition parue en 1798 aux éditions viennoises Artaria est dédiée à Magdalena von Kurzböck qui était alors l'une des pianistes les plus en vue de la métropole royale et impériale. Haydn connaissait personnellement les deux pianistes et fut même témoin au mariage de Therese Jansen avec Gaetano Bartolozzi en mai 1795. La «Grand Sonata», telle que la désignent les premières éditions, porte bien son nom, non seulement du fait de ses exigences techniques et de son ampleur, mais aussi de son caractère. Dès l'impressionnante ouverture, le premier mouvement établit d'emblée clairement qu'il s'agit d'une musique de concert. L'Adagio en léger décalage (y compris sur le plan harmonique puisqu'il est en mi majeur!) offre un moment de calme méditatif avant que le Presto final aux accents hongrois ne vienne clore l'ensemble. Réalisée par Georg Feder, grand spécialiste de Haydn, cette édition urtext reprend la partition de l'édition intégrale des oeuvres de Haydn, complétée des doigtés de Hans-Martin Theopold. Die Es-dur-Sonate Haydns ist gleich mit zwei großen Musikerinnen und Musikmetropolen verknüpft: Haydn komponierte sie laut Autograph 1794 in London für die dort gefeierte Pianistin Therese Jansen; der 1798 beim Wiener Verlag Artaria erschienene Erstdruck hingegen ist Magdalena von Kurzböck gewidmet, die damals zu den bedeutendsten Pianistinnen der K.-u.-k.-Metropole zählte. Haydn war mit beiden Musikerinnen persönlich bekannt, bei der Hochzeit Therese Jansens mit Gaetano Bartolozzi war er im Mai 1795 sogar Trauzeuge. Die in den frühen Drucken sogenannte "Grand Sonata" macht ihrem Namen nicht nur in Umfang und technischem Anspruch alle Ehre, sondern auch im Tonfall. Dass dies öffentlichkeitwirksame Musik fürs Konzertpodium ist, stellt der Kopfsatz in seiner imponierenden Eröffnung gleich klar. Das (auch harmonisch nach E-dur!) "entrückte" Adagio bildet den meditativen Ruhepunkt, bevor ein ungarisch angehauchtes Presto-Finale den Kehraus macht. Die vom Haydn-Spezialisten Georg Feder herausgegebene Urtextausgabe liefert den Notentext der Haydn-Gesamtausgabe, ergänzt mit einem Fingersatz von Hans-Martin Theopold.
