THE EMBERA PILGRIMS

Vivian Helena Arteaga Toro
Among the indigenous cultures of the Colombian territory, the Embera Chamí communities have been characterized by a certain dynamic of displacement from their original resguardos located in the departments of Risaralda and Caldas, such as the Cañón resguardo along the banks of the San Juan river; to new urban contexts such as San Antonio del Chamí, Mistrató or Arnserma, places that serve as intermediate zones in their transit to larger cities such as Pereira, Manizales or Bogotá, where they have been observed working in informal street vending and destitution in many cases. These displacements and new settlements in urban contexts do not necessarily imply the abandonment of their ancestral roots, since the indigenous communities preserve their ethnic identity and instill it in their new generations in these intercultural contexts. This research invites us to reflect on the importance of redefining ethno-education as a need that goes beyond the indigenous reservations where it is intended to be delimited; it is proposed as a duty incumbent upon the entire national education system.
