It is unusual to deal with foreign direct investments (FDIs) at a greater level of spatial detail, because the relevant statistics kept by the central banks are compiled at the national level only. Hovever, this map sheet of the Atlas Eastern- and Southeastern Europe is based on a regionalised set of data of these direct investments. These data are linked to regional-economic, social and geographical indicators, in order to gain insight into the spatial distribution of international capital flows. The accompanying bilingual explanatory text (English/German) takes a closer look at the definition of FDI, contains a comprehensive description of the historical development ? which was frequently subject to change ? of the relation between Vienna and Central Europe, and it also investigates the development of FDI since 1989. This historical review is necessary, because it is the key to understanding the current processes described in the maps. As a next step, the data used to produce this map sheet, are statistically analysed and described.
