Identifying Motivational Factors in Malawi's National Football Team

Charles Leyman Kachitsa
The book focuses on management motivation in football management, based on a study of the Malawi National football team. It highlights why its players continued to be motivated despite perennial lack of adequate resources. The book's literature review, examines available theories of motivation universally used and those specific to sports. Taking on an Interpretivist philosophy, the research took a qualitative approach, using interviews for data gathering. Notably, the study came up with three highlighted findings; a possible link between authority and motivation; without authority you cannot motivate subordinates, a management motivation hypothesis yet to be expounded. Secondly, patriotism as a motivational factor and thirdly what was termed 'Delegated Chieftaincy,' use of a more matured football player as the motivator of other younger players in the team. It would be interesting to see application of these motivational factors to traditional work organisations, in what the author referred to as, 'Importation of management skills.' This study was concluded as very significant in contributing to the area of management motivation.
