BMW Aero Engines
The history of BMW aircraft engines encompasses the period from 1917 to 1999. Even allowing for the years of non-production, BMW was actively involved in the development and manufacture of aero engines for some five decades. The pivotal era was from 1917 to 1945, when BMW ranked among the biggest and best-known companies in Germany's aviation industry. During this time, aero engines constituted by far the most important product segment and had an enduring impact on the company. After WW2, BMW turned to engine construction once again in the 1950s and 1990s. The chapter covering these two eras concludes this book. Its aim is to grant a broad readership an insight into the history of aviation from the perspective of a company involved in the sector. But aircraft enthusiasts too will find a wealth of new information and lots of previously unpublished illustrations.
