The complexity of the identity issue in Côte d'Ivoire

Kouakou Octave DJENZOU
After thirty-nine years of political stability, Côte d'Ivoire was recently shaken by two coups d'état. Thus, the political stability of Côte d'Ivoire, long presented as a model, ended with the death of the "father of independence," Félix Houphouët-Boigny, on December 7, 1993. The "war of succession" between the two heirs, Alassane Ouattara and Henri Konan Bédié, crystallized around the definition of an Ivorian identity, which gave rise to the concept of "Ivorianness".In an analytical approach, this article shows how the concept of "Ivorianness" has been instrumentalized by politics to disintegrate Ivorian society.
