Ethnic Minorities and Visitor Use/Non-Use of National Parks

Nina S. Roberts
Empirical research regarding ethnic minorities and outdoor recreation in national parks is growing. Rocky Mountain National Park receives over 3-million visitors annually yet the diversity among park users does not reflect communities. Using a multi-method approach (Delphi, focus groups, and mail back survey), this study explored constraints experienced by African Americans and Latinos. The issue of perceived discrimination embedded in institutional practices and among white park visitors, and opinions of minority resource professionals were also considered integral to this project. Results of the study indicate that while ethnicity and culture influenced visitor attitudes and non-visitor perceptions in how they experienced constraints, gender and income may have had a greater impact. Further research is needed. Discomfort/safety,
