The internationalization of the Syrian conflict

Hugo Ulm
While the world, and more particularly the Arab world, saw a glimmer of democratic hope during the Arab Spring, no one expected to see the emergence of a conflict as deadly as the complex Syrian conflict. Syria has been ruled since 1971 by the Assad family, which comes from the country's Alawite minority and holds the country with an iron fist, excluding the Sunni majority from power and the economy. While peaceful protests for freedom broke out, the Revolution finally took up arms in the face of the violence used by Bashar al-Assad's regime, marking the beginning of an extremely complex conflict due to international actors who also intervened in their turn. Indeed, a multitude of actors, whether regional or international, are involved in the conflict in order to support either the Baath regime or the rebels, depending on the alliance game and religious or cultural proximity. We are also witnessing the emergence of a very powerful terrorist group that is unanimously supported by all parties to destroy it but has a different approach to its destruction.
