«The poorer they are, the more they need us». One hundred years serving children. The Sister of Providence for abandoned children of Monsignor Francesco Torta

Federica Villa
In 1944 the then eighty-year-old Monsignor Francesco Torta dedicated to the Sisters of Providence for Abandoned Children a spiritual testament to show them the way to follow to lead the Congregation in the years to come: «Love each other as sisters [...]. Love the children, especially the poorest and the abandoned. Our Congregation was founded for the purpose of educating and empowering abandoned children. Always remember to see in them souls redeemed by the most precious Blood of Jesus Christ and nothing else [...]. Pray, my children, pray, pray! Prayer will give unction, strength, sweetness, irresistible charm to your words, you will move the souls of children and lead them to God [...]». Monsignor Torta indicated three important points to his beloved sisters: love each other as sisters, love the children and pray, pray, pray! (...) Many things have changed since then: during the 100 years of its history, the Congregation has opened up to the missions and many new African sisters have joined the family of Monsignor Torta. But something has always remained as it was: the charisma of Monsignor Torta, a charisma made up of a sincere, deep, unconditional love for children in need.
