Travelogue as a Literary Genre

Bushra Jafri
The book aims at exploring and analysing travelogue as a literary genre with special reference to Salman Rushdie's The Jaguar Smile, R. K. Narayan's The Emerald Route, Amitav Ghosh's In an Antique Land and Vikram Seth's From Heaven Lake. A travelogue, like a diary, memoir, and autobiography is marked by the four R's of literature: 1. Recreation, 2. Revelation, 3. Recognition, and 4. Redemption; and literariness arises from the techniques of presentation and the handling of form and style. A modest attempt has thus been made to explore and highlight types and topos of travelogue as a literary genre. The writers chosen for detailed analysis are established global literary figures. Their travelogues are an extension of their creative corpus and persona. The book is divided into four major chapters besides a comprehensive Introduction and Conclusion. A detailed analysis has been done in the light of major diasporic theories, travel theories, ecocriticism, transnationalism, postmodernism, and humanistic approach.
