Et in picturam et in sanctitatem

Junhyoung M. Shin
Albrecht Dürer published a pictorial codex titled Marienleben in 1511 and dedicated it to Caritas Pirckheimer, abbess of Franciscan convent St. Clara in Nuremberg and older sister of his friend Wilibald Pirckheimer. The iconographic program of the Marienleben drew on the orthodox traditions of the Church, such as the mysteries of rosary, the sequential illustrations in the Hours of the Virgin, and the readings and hymns in the contemporary missal of the diocese of Bamberg. This book argues that Dürer designed the Marienleben as a meditative manual that could assist the nuns of St. Clara to contemplate and envision the life of Mary in a traditional methodology of the Catholic Church. This "Catholic" aspect of the Marienleben was not given serious academic attention, since it was deemed to contradict Dürer's well-known sympathy with Martin Luther's cause.
