After total mastectomy, two immediate reconstruction techniques are most commonly performed. The first uses a myocutaneous flap, either a transverse rectus abdominis myocutaneous flap (TRAM). The second uses prostheses or expanders. Compared to breast reconstruction with autologous flaps, the use of implants has several advantages.
