Patience in Indic and Sinic Strategic Cultures

This book studies the theoretically unattended yet practically familiar strategic style that Taiwanese/Chinese and Indian civilizations vividly exhibit, namely strategic patience. The chapters analyze Sino-India, China-Taiwan, and Indo-Pacific security issues in symmetric and asymmetric conflict resolution through this lens, thereby contributing to both IR theorization and foreign policymaking. Theoretically, this volume brings forth the civilizational component to demonstrate how cosmological sensibilities of long-term relations explain the adoption of non-solution to disputes. Practically, it shows how the use of non-solution constrains the escalation of conflict in both symmetric (India-China) asymmetric (Taiwan-China) relations but proceeds differently the two major issues in the Indo-Pacific security agenda. Regional groupings including ASEAN, SCO, SAARC and the South China Sea, are also discussed, especially within the ambit of Sino-India interactions.
