"First off, it was a meeting. One of those real, rare meetings, which assails you with the obvious, yet at the same time challenges convictions you had formed over years spent with photographers and photography. I had been told about Michael Ackerman by two women friends, who had seen his work, and thought I might find his approach interesting. When he phoned to fix an appointment, he mentioned a series on benares - the only one he reckoned was ready - and that had me wondering about how worthwile our forthcoming meeting might be. That is how it is with certain places and subjects, which have been photographed so much and are so cluttered with cliches, that they vanish behind a wall of imagery so hopelessly stereotyped that it is impenetrable.
