The Wheel Thrown Pottery in Southern Bilad al-Sham (12th-13th c.): production and consumption. The case-study of Shawbak (Southern Jordan)

Raffaele Ranieri
The volume investigates the dynamics of pottery production and consumption in southern Bilad al-Sham during the 12th and 13th centuries, using the archaeological site of Shawbak Castle (Jordan) as a case study. Based on the author's doctoral dissertation, the research analyzes several thousand ceramic fragments recovered from stratigraphically reliable contexts, through material culture and typological study methods. It examines the characteristics of the pottery in relation to the socio-economic dynamics of the period, spanning the Crusader, Ayyubid, and Mamluk eras. The study provides critical insights into the role of unglazed wheel-thrown pottery in medieval Jordan and enhances the ability to analyze and interpret socio-economic and production contexts in the region. The archaeological investigations, whose data are analyzed in this research, were conducted by the Italian Archaeological Mission Medieval Petra - Shobak Project, with the support of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and the University of Florence, in collaboration with the Department of Antiquities of Jordan.
