The Critical Identity of Modern Christianity. Schleiermacher's Definition of the Essence of the Christian Religion. (Text in German) In this study the author reconstructs systematically the theoretical context of Schleiermacher's historic definition of the essence of Christianity and its basic function as a constructing principle of theology. In conjunction with the intense discussion of the philosophical premise as well as the interpretation of Jesus as a historical character, a way of looking at this subject is given offering the reader a different general view of Schleiermacher's philosophical-theological work and facilitates the understanding of the method of a historic definition of the essence of Christianity. Der Autor rekonstruiert den theoretischen Gehalt von Schleiermachers historischer Wesenbestimmung des Christentums und deren grundlegende Funktion als Konstruktionsprinzip der Theologie. In Verbindung mit der intensiven Diskussion der philosophischen Voraussetzungen sowie der Deutung der historischen Person Jesu wird so eine Interpretation entfaltet, die eine veränderte Gesamtsicht von Schleiermachers philosophisch-theologischem Werk erschließt und grundsätzliche Einsichten in die Systematik einer historischen Wesensbestimmung des Christentums ermöglicht.
