Association between endothelial markers (ET-1 and NO)and HIV

Sinethemba Zono, Ekambaram Umapathy, Kofoworola Awotedu
South Africa has the biggest and most high profile of HIV epidemic in the world and it accounts for a third of all new HIV infections in southern Africa. HIV/AIDS is not the only challenge in South African, there are other non-communicable diseases that seems to be equivalent with risk factors. Endothelial dysfunction is an early finding in the progression of cardiovascular disease and is closely related to clinical events in patients with obesity and hypertension. In the Eastern Cape an understudied province in South Africa has high prevalence of obesity and hypertension and that always raise concerns for HIV challenged population. In this book we screen for risk factors for endothelial dysfunction in HIV/AIDS-exposed populations, and we provide early (preclinical) and predictive information on cardiovascular risk and future events.
