Reflecting on the effectiveness of the Convention on Biological Diversity in local economic development
Internship Report from the year 2014 in the subject Business economics - Economic Policy, , course: Master in Cooperation and Development, language: English, abstract: "Anything is right when it preserves the integrity, stability and beauty of the biotic. Community. It is wrong when it tends to do otherwise."(Aldo Leopold, 1949) Human activity has increasingly triggered extinction and caused noticeable changes in biodiversity distribution. These changes such as the encroachment on natural habitats through agriculture and construction of infrastructure have altered natural processes and changed the resilience of ecosystems. I spent three months in Ohrid, the Republic of Macedonia in 2013 assessing the impact of the Sahara Tourist Resort on biodiversity in Lake Ohrid. At the time there was very little information available on the particular subject; I "reshaped" my research to takes into account local participation and the likely impact local economic activities - particularly the tourist infrastructure projects - on biodiversity in the Ohrid region (the territory around the Ohrid lake, a water basin shared by the Republic of Macedonia and the Republic of Albania)using the Convention on Biodiversity (CBD), and its implementation, as the basis for analysis. During my research, I observed that agriculture, fishing, and tourism were lucrative human activities that exerted the highest negative pressure on Ohrid's biodiversity. However, as I commenced my research, the results seemed to suggest otherwise.
