Onchocerciasis

Onchocerciasis, also known as river blindness or Robles disease, is a parasitic disease caused by infection by the nematode Onchocerca volvulus. The disease causes skin and eye inflammation that can lead to blindness. The parasite is transmitted to humans by the black fly which breeds in fast-flowing rivers. The flies were so omnipresent in some areas that the population sometimes left their villages, although they often had fertile agricultural lands.
