Md. Abu Zafor, Mohammad Sadu Miah, Mohammad Jahirul Islam
This GIS based case study work was carried out to environment friendly exposure condition at various location of Sylhet city. Sound level Meter (SLM) was used for assesses the noise level condition and noise mapping was done using Geographic Information System (GIS) technique. The Department of Environment (DOE), Bangladesh standards were used as limits for the designated land uses. A total number of 44 noise monitoring stations were selected for the collection of data classified based on commercial, residential and mixed areas. Noise recordings were conducted using morning, noon and evening periods of the day. From the study, it was observed that the overall sound level condition of the Sylhet city is unsafe in different locations for human health and it exceeds the noise standards established by the Department of Environment (DOE), Bangladesh. The maximum noise levels ranging between 80-89.4 dB (A) recorded in commercial locations, 70-82.2 dB (A) in residential areas and 82-98 dB (A) in mixed areas (CNG Refueling stations) in the city. The study was identified that, the safe distance for maximum permissible noise levels between 31ft. to 73.5 ft. away from the noise source.
