The Perception of Foreign Films by American College Students

Jessica Haunschild
Why are Hollywood movies successful around the world, while foreign films are almost guaranteed to be box-office poison in the United States? Are foreign films concerned with topics and problems of no interest to Americans, making it hard to relate to these films? Or are foreign films simply underrepresented in the large group of films battling over the American movie viewer's attention? This study tries to answer these questions through a quantitative and qualitative analysis of the perception of foreign films by American college students: How do they react to these films? Have they ever watched foreign films before? Are they prejudiced against movies which weren't"made in the U.S.A."? Is it possible to change their opinion? Can foreign films be more popular in the United States? If so, how?
