Medical and psychological aspects of domestic violence

Natalia Viktorovna Lohmatkina
The problem of domestic violence in general, and its type such as violence by a spouse/partner against a woman, has attracted the attention of scholars and practitioners because of its frequent occurrence and its adverse impact on the personality and health of all family members. Doctors can make a significant contribution to the prevention of incidents of domestic violence and the rehabilitation of its victims. In recent years, much translated literature has appeared in Russia on the involvement of medical professionals in programmes to help women who have experienced violence.Without detracting from the merits of foreign approaches, we must acknowledge that the time has come to develop domestic models for identifying and rehabilitating women who have suffered from violence, given the specifics of our mentality and healthcare system. This book presents the results of the first Russian research in general medical practice on medical and psychological aspects of spousal/partner violence against a woman in connection with the organization of medical and psychological help for the victims. The book is intended for researchers and practitioners in the fields of medicine, psychology and sociology working with the problem of domestic violence.
