The language of contemporary judicial discourse as a semiological system

Lilia Shevyrdyaeva
Judicial communication within the U.S. Supreme Court is of great value to study because it is a type of communication of people who are as literate and serious about words as linguists. The present monograph is devoted to a comprehensive study of such a multifactorial systemic entity as judicial discourse in sociolinguistic, pragmatic and functional-stylistic aspects, aiming ultimately to describe the action of linguocognitive mechanism in judicial discourse. The research focuses on how the processes of comprehension and cognitive reconstruction of reality in the aspect of law are carried out in and with the help of the language. The description of judicial activity is based on the analysis of cognitive structures - concepts and frames - and their linguistic objectification, i.e. terms and other units of special vocabulary. The result is the language of judicial discourse as a special semiological, i.e. sign system, which directly determines the process of legal regulation and is studied in the unity of content and expression.pJudicial communication within the U.S. Supreme Court is of great value to study because it is a type of communication of people who are as literate and serious about words as linguists.
