Aaron, the adoptive child of a rich couple of attorneys in New York, is quarreling with his identity. He is a Lakota orphan, his parents had died during a car accident. As he loves nature, he works as a park ranger in the Yellowstone National Park. He is the classical dropout and mountain man. His companions are the mustangs Swift and Dusty and the wolfhound Sky. Then Angelina enters his life: a pretty girl from Chicago. She works as a scientist at a biological project, during which wolves in the Yellowstone area are equipped with transmitters to take bearings. There she meets Aaron and has to make a decision whether she wants to make a career or live as a dropout. The secret protagonist of the novel is the rough wilderness of the Rocky Mountains. At the same time the novel describes in a grip-ping way the very beginnings of the concept of environmental protection.
