Many studies analyze substitution potentialsof occupations as the amount of their tasks,which machines can possibly carry out in thefuture. In the following, we discuss to whatextent these substitution potentials mightactually materialize along the interpretationof a plethora of indexes. We, first, combinetwo indexes about task content from the employerand employee perspective to assesssubstitution potentials. Second, we constructfour different indexes about the state of digitalizationof industrial sectors and use themto discuss actual exploitation of substitutionpotentials. Our findings suggest that relativelylarge decreases in labor demand are possiblein the chemical and pharmaceutical sectoras well as traffic, warehousing, and postalservices. For these sectors, we find both comparablyhigh substitution potentials and exploitation.
