BASIC CONCEPTS OF PRECISION MEDICINE

Eduardo Reyna-Villasmil
Precision medicine is the new era of medicine and refers to the tailoring of diagnostics and treatments to subpopulations with common susceptibility to a particular disease or similar response to particular drugs. Environmental, social and behavioral factors are as important as genetic factors in most polygenic diseases and managing these factors is an important part of precision medicine. The tools of precision medicine are: Big data, different omics, pharmacogenomics and the integration of these to preventive and population medicine. The development of biomarkers based on omics and development of drugs based on these are evidence of this advance. Precision medicine will also have its place in the management of infectious diseases, asthma, autoimmune diseases, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and obesity. Finally, the integration of precision with prevention and public health makes "precision medicine" a complete end product that will change the way medicine is practiced in the future.
